About us

The story of Chun Café began in 2020, as a very small shop on the Berenstraat in The Nine Streets in Amsterdam. We were the first to sell high quality matcha and milk tea in Amsterdam and offer a true getaway for the locals after the covid challenges. Within the first year of opening, we had the honour to partner with brands that we love; Filling Pieces, Uniqlo, Ace & Tate and many more.

We quickly outgrew our first location and moved 2 doors to a bigger space. Here we developed Chun Café as it is today – a modern fast casual concept selling high quality toasts, matcha and coffee. We made sure that the concept reflects our passion for quality and aesthetics.

Our deep interest in matcha has always been at the heart of developing our café drinks. Starting from 2022, we had the opportunity to visit the tea people from Uji, Kyoto personally. We source Chun matcha directly from small, family-owned farms in Japan. We are grateful to learn directly from the tea curators themselves, connecting with the people from Uji, and visiting the factories from time to time.

In 2024 we opened our second Chun Café at the Spuistraat in Amsterdam. A passion project where we focused on operational efficiency and customer service, and updated the menu with more toast options.

We are a small business, but with a big dream: to provide a unique experience our customers, and to offer high quality food and drinks that bring comfort in a modern setting. We believe in the power of humbleness, and are deeply committed to both our craft and the people who make it all happen. Our team is the heart of Chun, and we are proud to nurture a workplace where everyone is valued and respected.

When you visit Chun Café or are enjoying your homemade cup of Chun Matcha, we hope you will be inspired by our way of life and our sense of aesthetics, because of the care and the attention to detail that goes into everything we do.

Thank you for being a part of our journey. We can’t wait to share more with you.

Chun Café, Berenstraat 4 H

Where it all started

Our first location in the Berenstraat was a small shop selling drinks and a curated range of homeware. Mostly tea related items.

We were the first to sell high quality matcha and milk tea in Amsterdam and a true getaway for the locals after covid.

We quickly outgrew our first location. Within the first year of opening, we had the honor to partner with brands that we love; Uniqlo, Filling Pieces, Ace & Tate and many more.

The toast creation

In 2021 we moved two doors and introduced Chun Café as it is today – a modern fast casual concept selling high quality toasts, matcha and coffee.

After several rounds of development we found the perfect recipe for our bread and for the signature items that many of you love: the Rib Eye Bulgogi toast and Matcha Strawberry latte.

Our toasts were quickly recognized and went viral, becoming the icon of Chun Café.

Uji, Kyoto, Japan

Chun Matcha

Our deep interest in matcha has always been at the heart of developing our café drinks.

Starting from 2022, we had the opportunity to visit the tea people from Uji, Kyoto personally. We focus on quality but differentiate ourselves through personal preferences and blends. By appreciating people’s tastes and preferences, we add variety and excitement to our matcha creations.

Now, you can experience the same matcha we serve in our cafés in the comfort of your own home.

The queue

By the end of 2022, the lines seemed unstoppable. What initially appeared to be just a "hype", as most people thought, quickly turned into something much more: our café became a must-visit spot in town. We expanded our team rapidly, learning valuable lessons through trial and error and facing new challenges every day.

However, our core values have remained unchanged: maintaining quality and kindness while keeping pace with the energy and rhythm of the crowd.

Our second location

In 2024 we opened our long-awaited new café in Amsterdam. Simple yet multi-functional.

In this location we offer more seating, with just a 10-minute walk away from our first location.

Throughout the café, we created a harmonious interplay of textures, colours, and sensations. The mix of materials creates a welcoming environment. We elevated our interior design to a more refined level, seamlessly blending it with our playful yet clean branding. For this project we successfully worked closely with Studio Adjective, based in Hong Kong.
